The next Snapchat filter will be designed by… teenagers!

Google and Snap want teenagers to design the next Snapchat filter. Why? The answer is pretty obvious… Youngsters are the most typical users of Snapchat, so who would be better at creating a new filter than those who are willing to use it?

and Google have a close relationship. Snap has a $ 2 billion deal to house its services in the Google cloud for 5 years. Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Alphabet (Google’s parent company), is a close friend of Evan Spiegel. Rumor has it that Google wants to buy Snap, but there’s nothing certain about this.

This close relationship between Google and Snap (the parent company of Snapchat), continues to be strong. That is the reason why they’re going to introduce a code competition that invites young people to create a new Snapchat filter. The finalists will compete in an event during the TEDWomen conference which will be held in New Orleans (in November).
Like in any other competition, there will be judges. They will be: Evan Spiegel (Snap’s creator and CEO), Laurie Hernandez (Olympic medalist), and Victoria Justice (actress), among others. The winners will work with the engineers of both companies to get the filter that millions of Snapchat users will be able to enjoy.

This code competition comes at a time when Google is facing criticism about diversity. The competition falls under Google’s “Made with Code” program, an initiative which was thought to include more girls in the code world. Google also faces more controversy over a US Department of Labor investigation into gender-based wage discrimination, as well as a lawsuit filed this month that accuses the company of gender discrimination. As if that wasn’t enough, James Damore (former Google engineer), said that the gender gap exists in the technology industry because of “biological differences” between males and females. Can you believe someone said this in the middle of the XXI century??? . Luckily, Sundar Pichai (Google CEO) fired James Damore… but the damage to the company reputation is done.

When Google and Snap revealed that this competition was going to be done, Pichai told the audience (which, of course, included many young girls): “I want you to know that there is a place for you in this industry, there’s a place for you in Google, do not let anyone tell you otherwise, you belong here, and we need you.”
